I also wonder why Facebook would need so much more memory to process all of its jobs than it's competitors in 2009 - is this due to just bigger tasks, or poorer data compression/storage?

I wonder what these numbers look like today -- it seems crazy that big data computations can fit in only 256 gigabytes!
